What experiences have shaped your journey and brought you to your current position?

My journey in the travel industry has been a robust one, shaped by a deep understanding of the trade. I've navigated the intricate landscape of this business, overcoming challenges that range from the pressures exerted by airlines to addressing passengers' concerns and tackling airport-related issues. The path hasn't been without its trials, but each challenge has been an opportunity for growth. The demands of this dynamic field have equipped me with valuable insights and a positive mindset. I've faced and handled various aspects of this trade with spirit, allowing me to reach my current position. Yet, my journey doesn't end here; there's still much more to explore and accomplish as I strive for continuous growth and success. It’s god gift for me.

 

If you hadn't entered the travel industry, what alternative path might you have chosen for your life?

If not in the travel industry, I might have pursued an early marriage, becoming a dedicated homemaker. Understanding my husband's emotions, raising children, and managing household affairs would have been my focus. Alternatively, I could envision myself in another country, exploring opportunities and experiences beyond borders, embracing a different lifestyle.

 

In a sector where the majority is male-dominated, do you think it's possible for women to thrive and make a significant impact?

Absolutely. While the travel sector, like many others, has seen more male involvement historically, the narrative is evolving. Women bring a unique set of skills to the table – we are multitaskers, adept at balancing various responsibilities. It's not just about joining the travel sector; women can excel in diverse fields. Our ability to adapt, collaborate, and innovate knows no bounds. Diversity in the workplace is essential for growth and success, and I believe women can make significant contributions across various sectors, transcending traditional boundaries.

 

What services does your travel agency offer, and how do you contribute to promoting travel within Nepal?

Our travel agency, Riyan Travels and Tours, specializes in ticketing, tours, and visa services, catering to outbound travellers across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. We make it possible for tourists to explore wherever their heart desire. Moreover, I strongly believe that as travel agencies in Nepal, we should collectively showcase our beautiful country. Beyond the well-known destinations like Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Lumbini, we must actively promote hidden gems. By boosting inbound tourism, we not only contribute to the development of our nation but also stimulate economic growth—an essential step for our collective progress.

 

What challenges or dark aspects have you encountered in the travel industry during your experience?

The travel industry, while vibrant, has its dark side. One significant issue is the lack of discipline among airline staff, often with airline key managers unaware or indifferent. Corruption is pervasive, where tickets are priced based on bribes rather than fair practices. Personal relations often take precedence over professionalism, disadvantaging those without connections. The disparity in income capacity is glaring, with exorbitant fares for lower-class students. Airport staff behaviour, especially towards foreigners, lacks the respect seen in other countries. National carriers should strengthen operations, boost fair competition and setting industry standards. Some airlines excel in service, but others must learn and improve. A robust, responsive National Carrier is crucial for guiding and competing effectively on the global stage, ensuring a positive and equitable experience for all travellers.

 

How crucial is the support of airlines for the development of a travel agency, and can you share your experience with the airlines that have contributed to your agency?

The support of airlines is undeniably vital for the development of a travel agency. We've been fortunate to receive contributions from several airlines, and I express my gratitude to those who have supported us wholeheartedly. For those who haven't, it's indeed their loss. An airline support has been instrumental, especially in our growth phase, but there's room for improvement. The focus should shift towards nurturing upcoming and new agencies, providing equal opportunities and maintaining a neutral market. New generations often face challenges due to established agencies holding onto the industry, hindering opportunities for newcomers. It's essential to push for the inclusion of new entrants, urging airlines to give them the chance they deserve for a more vibrant and competitive travel industry.

 

How can the government contribute to the development of inbound travel, fostering growth in the tourism sector?

The government plays a pivotal role in boosting inbound travel. Investments in infrastructure, such as improved transportation and accommodation facilities, create a welcoming environment. Streamlining visa processes and regulations facilitates easy entry for tourists. Additionally, promoting lesser-known destinations through marketing initiatives can diversify tourist attractions. Offering incentives and support to local businesses in the tourism sector can further enhance the overall experience for visitors. Government commitment and collaboration with stakeholders are key to realizing the full potential of inbound travel for economic development.

 

What issues do you see in terms of support and the existing system?

The commendable efforts of leaders in the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, notably Mr. Kirati, are praiseworthy for their dedication to elevating Nepalese tourism standards. However, their endeavours seem hindered by challenges in garnering sufficient support and navigating the existing system. Despite their hard work, a perceived lack of backing and systemic hurdles may impede the desired progress. This scenario underscores the need for a more collaborative and supportive environment, where leaders can effectively implement initiatives to enhance the tourism sector, ultimately contributing to the growth and prosperity of Nepal's tourism industry.
