THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY OF NEPAL

Shimul Niraula

CEO, Mishisa Cosmetics

Mishisa Cosmetics, founded in 2020 by Shimul, operates with a robust business model that encompasses importing, wholesaling, distributing, and retailing. Since its inception, the company has grown to become an exclusive importer of 18 authorized brands, offering a wide range of beauty products in the Nepalese market. With a strong focus on authenticity and quality, Mishisa Cosmetics has successfully established itself as a trusted name in Nepal's ever-evolving beauty industry.

In the competitive world of cosmetics, Mishisa Cosmetics has carved a niche for itself by emphasizing authenticity and quality. The company, founded in 2020 by Shimul, is quickly becoming a household name in Nepal. With a deep-rooted family background in the cosmetics industry, Shimul has leveraged her knowledge and passion to build a brand that resonates with both men and women across the country.

Building a Beauty Empire

When Shimul returned to Nepal after her studies abroad, the world was grappling with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. What could have been a challenging time for many became an opportunity for Shimul to dive into the business world. "I was in my final year of college when COVID-19 hit. I couldn't return back to Japan however, I had already finished all my studies and completed my credits, so I decided to start my own business," Shimul recalls.

Mishisa Cosmetics began with just two brands. Today, it boasts 18 authorized brands, spanning across hair care, skin care, makeup, and derma products. "We are the exclusive importers of these brands, ensuring that our customers receive only the best," she says.

The Philosophy of Beauty

For Shimul, beauty is more than skin deep. "Beauty is a tool to grow self-confidence by enhancing your own features. It's not about setting a standard for everyone," she explains. Whether it's through a simple skincare routine or feeling good without makeup, Shimul believes that beauty is about what makes you feel comfortable and happy.

This philosophy is deeply personal to her. "When I was studying in Japan, I didn't use any cosmetics other than sunscreen. I would take pictures in nature and feel so pretty without anything on my face. That, to me, is beauty—feeling good in your own skin."

The Challenge of Authenticity

In a market flooded with unauthorized products, Mishisa Cosmetics stands out by offering only authorized brands. This is a crucial aspect of their business model. "Authorization comes from price uniformity with international standards. Many high-end brands in the market set prices arbitrarily because they're not authorized. My goal is to ensure our customers don't pay unnecessarily high prices," Shimul emphasizes.

The company also offers a range of products catering to different budgets—from high-end brands to more affordable options for college students. "We have products for both beginners and professionals. When it comes to skincare, Nepalese consumers are willing to invest in quality."

Overcoming Challenges

Despite its success, Mishisa Cosmetics faces challenges, particularly with customs regulations. "The major challenge we are facing is at customs, not only us but everyone in the industry are facing this challenge. The rules are not set, and there's a lack of understanding about what documents are needed. If the government could standardize this process for it would make the entire process much smoother," Shimul shares.

A Name with Meaning

The name "Mishisa" holds a special place in Shimul's heart. It is derived from the initials of her mother, Meena, herself, and her sister, Saanvi. This personal connection reflects the care and dedication that Shimul puts into her business.
