We are Commitment to Safety and Service Excellence

Could you please introduce Bhutan Airlines to our readers?

Bhutan Airlines, officially known as Tashi Air Pvt. Ltd., is one of Bhutan's two airlines, distinct as a privately owned entity alongside the state-owned Druk Air. We commenced operations with our inaugural commercial flight on the Paro - Bangkok route on October 10, 2013, marking a significant milestone in Bhutan's aviation history. Shortly thereafter, on December 16, 2013, we expanded our network with daily scheduled flights to Kolkata, India. Today, Bhutan Airlines proudly offers a comprehensive schedule of operations, facilitating seamless travel between destinations. Our services include daily flights connecting Bangkok to Paro via Kolkata, along with six weekly flights to Kathmandu, ensuring accessibility and convenience for our passengers, except on Fridays.

What are your primary focuses at Bhutan Airlines?

At Bhutan Airlines, our primary focus is on maintaining exceptionally high safety and service standards. Operating out of Paro Airport, located in a challenging windy valley, presents unique operational hurdles. Flights at this airport are restricted to visual flight rules, particularly challenging during the windy summer months when operations must cease by noon due to weather conditions. Despite these challenges, our commitment remains unwavering in providing a safe and dependable service. Our current fleet comprises two Airbus A319 aircraft, offering 12 Business Class and 114 Premium Economy seats. As a full-service carrier, we pride ourselves on offering extensive onboard meal options. Our immediate objective is to achieve profitability and operational stability on our existing routes.

How would you describe the tourism relationship between Bhutan and Nepal?

The relationship between Bhutan and Nepal in terms of tourism is deeply intertwined with shared cultural, linguistic, and religious ties. Many Bhutanese reside in Nepal, fostering a cultural exchange that enriches both nations. Tourists visiting Nepal often extend their journey to include Bhutan, attracted by the cultural and natural diversity both countries offer. Similarly, travelers bound for Bhutan frequently choose Nepal as a stopover destination, further enhancing the tourism synergy between the two countries. This mutual interest and cultural affinity have forged a robust tourism relationship, benefiting both Bhutan and Nepal.

How does Bhutan Airlines manage its operations in Kathmandu?

Recently, we have integrated into the Global Distribution System (GDS), enabling us to reach a broader audience through IATA-certified travel agents. In Kathmandu, we operate a fifth freedom flight to Delhi, a highly competitive route that poses challenges despite its potential. The addition of the A320 to our fleet will provide us with a competitive edge in this market.

Tourist traffic from Kathmandu to Paro is seasonal, and our goal is to establish this route as a regular destination for tourists. Building sustainable tourism traffic on this route remains a primary objective for us.

What strategic steps is Bhutan Airlines taking to expand its operations and enhance profitability?

Expanding beyond Bhutan's focus on high-spending tourists and premium services demands careful strategic planning. To bolster our operational capabilities and profitability, we are moving forward with plans to expand our fleet by incorporating the A320 aircraft, aimed at reducing operational costs.

Additionally, we have recently established a city office in Kathmandu with the belief that it will fortify our presence and market position in the region. Similar strategic initiatives are underway in Kolkata, New Delhi, and Bangkok, where we aim to strengthen our foothold and enhance service offerings.
